A winter engagement session in Red Lake Ontario! I do love Red Lake, it is nice to go visiting with friends and meet new friends. Had a lovely time with this lovely couple celebrating their up coming marriage. It was a perfect day out on the lake, feels like spring.

I am looking forward to the summer wedding, are you sure Spencer can't come? He is very photogenic.

What a beautiful place! I had a great time with my lovely assistant, while taking photos in the Rembrandt Bistro. We had the whole building to ourselves, I could have stayed for hours.

Northern Mush!.............is a photographic journal, as seen through their eyes and hearts alongside "Isobel the Blind Sled Dog" and their energetic canine friends. Photographers Kimberley Friesen & Jenafor Azure captured special moments in the busy lives of Gerald and Jenafor Azure as Bed & Breakfast host and tourism operators, in the remote and isolated community of Churchill, Manitoba...the Polar Bear and Beluga Whale Capital of the world.

This little guy was only 9 days old when he came to me, what a little sweet heart. He was so alert and calm, it was also interesting to watch a new Father try to hold his boy in weird positions for me. I think the photos turned out well, hope you like them.

Note to self, does not like to be cold, we put on the tutu and she was not a happy camper, but we did get the sweetest photos of her. These too little cutie-pies had their photos taken in my basement studio - They did so well, happy little tikes. I couldn't help but use the angel wings with them and Aunty brought flowers! I love it when we use flowers. The little one is only 2 months old, she fell asleep on my sheep skin rug, so cute.

This is the result of loads of fun, I chased this little cutie around my yard one afternoon while she carried 11 balloons. Her mother brought me a similar image and asked me to try to replicate it. I think I did a pretty good job, hope you like it Mary-Anne.

This was one of those rare moments when a girl can tell her in-laws were to go...stand. It was a tough bunch but I don't take alot of guff from nobody. I actually kind of enjoyed this, all my Aunts and Uncles had to listen to me and obey (almost had to boot a couple of uncles out - you shall remain nameless), hehehehehe. This was most likely a once in a lifetime thing, I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Picture it, a winter setting, soft snow gently drifting to the earth, a white pony so gentle and sweet, and riding this white pony a lovely, little angel - this just makes me smile.

This little sweet heart bravely rode Sugar bareback in a huge prom dress and angel wings, then I chased her around the yard while she hung onto 11 helium balloons, I laughed so hard. This was a really fun shoot, so many elements to play with. I love it when the families give me ideas to work, with it makes the photos so personal, so unique.

I am not sure who's field we were by but it was a great location for this family shoot. There was an old gate and an old fence, some old trees and a boulder or two. I saw the potential and Colin and Laura trusted me. I think these turned out really well and they show the personality of each one here.

This Wedding took place at Pineridge Hollow, www.pineridgehollow.com , I have always wanted to do a wedding at Pineridge Hollow. It was perfect, the vows were spoken by the foot of the bridge, they signed the license under a canopy of ivy, and then walked away as man and wife while bubbles danced all around them. We took the formals in Birds Hill Park, it was an inspiring location, the red trees in the background and being surrounded by wild grasses. Perfect, just perfect.

For Dennis and Marlene it was important to celebrate this milestone with family and friends and to remember this wonderful day I took photos of everyone that came. Kim always dreamed of getting married on the point and the day arrived perfect in every way. It was a balmy 31 that beautiful October day, summer finally arrived! I never considered getting a burn in October before. The dinner was wonderful, the ceremony touching and the speeches brought a tear to many an eye. It was a good day.

I had the pleasure of shooting this wedding in Pakwash Park in Ontario, what a beautiful setting. Burgundy and Brent had an interesting request for me to shoot at nut. On a first date they cracked open at nut and inside was a perfect heart, they kept it all this time as a reminder that this was meant to be.

This was a wedding of uniqueness, the dress was inspiring, the hair very cool, the decor used wheat as the greens. I may be somewhat biased here but this was a great wedding. Jen and Toshinao's wedding should have been back in the flapper era.

Whisper a blessing to a butterfly

This was a wedding of details and I loved every one of them! Larissa and Clayton did a butterfly release after the ceremony with the guests, it was an amazing sight being surrounded by all those beautiful butterflies.

We wrestled with the weather but finally we won and were able to take some amazing photos on the dock, the sunset was breathtaking.

A lovely Wedding

I had the pleasure of spending the day with Chris & Jody on July 11th. It was a perfect day for a perfect wedding. I brought with me a red umbrella as a lark to see if we could use it somewhere and it turns out that the wedding colors went very well with it.

The guys were loads of fun, I personally love this shot of them in the theater. The dancing photo turned out beautiful, this was a 15 second exposure, Chris and Jody had to hold the kiss for the whole 15 seconds - pretty sure that was not too difficult to do!

Truck Driver Turned Singer

Off to a sod field north of Stead, the photo shoot is a success, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, the truck is stuck and we have no cell phone. Tempted to drive the fork lift the 10 k back to the yard we opted in waving down a pickup, they had a cell and we had service, back in business.

This singing truck driver is fulfilling a life long dream of creating a cd of his own. With a sweet sound of blue grass, the old time gospels are sung out with a happy heart, I can't wait for my copy. The photo shoot is for the cd cover, I am thinking this is gonna look good!

Happy Canada Day!

My family and I went to the Selkirk Canada Day Celebrations, the fireworks were excellent! I took my tripod with me so I could catch the fireworks in action.

The trick here is to have a long shutter speed set on your camera or use the bulb setting to keep the shutter open for a long time. Most of the shots I took were about 7 or more seconds long. Use the tripod to steady the camera because no one could hold a camera that long with out camera shake. If you don't have a tripod set your camera on something hard.

After the fireworks were over, we packed up to leave and I was picking up stray trash as I was walking away and I found $25.00! It pays to clean up after ourselves.

I spent the afternoon shooting a really big family, no one got hurt. What a great family! They even fed me, I like this, if anyone wants to feed me after I shoot them, that is fine by me.

I especially loved the couples that I photographed, the photos really show the relationships, the bonds, the love. Thanks for letting me experience all of you.

Our Spring has not been so nice to us! Chris & Jody had their engagement photos done last weekend but we needed to be inside. We went to the Legislature, I love this old building, the architecture is so beautiful, I could shoot there for days.

We had the place to ourselves as we shot the engagement photos, the wedding is this summer, I do believe Jody will make a beautiful bride! (of course you'll look dashing in your tux too Chris!)

I was a present for the Bridal couple for this wedding! I even wore a bow. We surprised the bride Marcia in her hotel room when she came to get ready for the wedding. Marcia and Lee got married at the Raddisson on Portage Ave, it was a small, intimate, lovely wedding.

On Saturday, Landon and his parents came to see me. These are Landon's One year baby photos! What a sweetheart, he laughed and played with me most of the time but you can see it in his eyes when he is looking at his mama! Very precious. Graffiti, is it Art?

My niece and I spent part of our Easter scouting out graffiti to photograph, she suggested it and I thought it was a great idea.

We found this park with the statue of an angel with a broken hand and broken wing, I felt well represented what we were seeking this day. There was one piece we found that is part of an advertisement on the side of a building, now that is a way to use this talent, it was very cool.

We found some amazing and vibrant graffiti but looking at it, it was hard to decide what to think of it. Here is someone trying to have a voice in this world, in not exactly the best way to express ones self but still a voice. These spaces left abandoned and cheerless, someone had something to say. I admit I was a bit scared of the places we went, I did not stray far from the car. But as I looked closely at what someone out there did, I wondered why...

Many times I have seen graffiti and think that it is just awful and people should know better. But why do they do it, what are they trying to say? Who are these people? I just wanted to let them know, I saw it and wondered about them, I noticed.

Northern Mush

The kids and I had the chance to go Dog Sledding with Bluesky Expeditions Bed & Sled. We spent 2 great days with some great people Gerald Azure & Jenafor Ollander in Churchill Manitoba the Polar Bear Capital OF THE WORLD!!!! Well we didn't see a polar bear this time, but last time we did! This time we got to sled with a team of 8 dogs, one being Isobel the Blind Sled Dog. Try to pick her out, it is nearly impossible, the only way you can tell is cause she is really cute and fuzzy. She is the second from the sled on the left (the mushers left) running side by side with Thunder Azure. We spent the day riding the trails and burning up jpegs as fast as I could.

Also I have a photo here of the tent, this was the ultimate in Churchill culture, wood stove blazing in the corner, kids sleeping on the couch on a bunch of quilts and Gerald napping on a recliner, Can the North get better Than THIS?!? Jenafor and I spent the evening running in and out of the tent comparing Northern Lights photos. I got a little creative and painted with a headlamp MUSH.

I'll be back to the north, I love this place.

Shelton & Kristi's Wedding

On Saturday, I had the pleasure of capturing Kristi and Sheltons special day! The wedding was in Carman, what a great place for shooting a wedding! The heritage buildings are fabulous and beautiful. We shot the formals in the Memorial building, there is an old theatre on the top floor that we had the run of. Kristi also had some of the coolest green shoes for her wedding day! She wore them with pride, John Deere was done proud today.

This was a wedding I did this past Friday for Jaime and Kyle. We had lots of fun and they couple had the cutest dog! We shot the formals at the Legislature in Winnipeg but the ceremony was in Steinbach. This was a hard one to choose some photos to put on the blog, there are so many I just love!

I got to go on vacation! We travelled to Dominican Republic, Punta Cana. What a lovely place, the landscape was amazing, I could have taken tons of photos.

My husband and I had a photo session with a professional photographer on the beach. I was nervous and wasn't sure what to do with my face, so this is how people feel when I am photographing them...hmmmmm, interesting.

I couldn't help but keep an eye on the photographer to see the angles he took and how he posed us, he was very good. I love the photos and I am so glad we did it.

Valentines Day Wedding!

On Valentine's Day I had the privilege to celebrate and capture Matthew & Hillarys wedding. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and the weather was perfect. Hillary looked stunning and Matthew was very handsome. Contrary to popular belief, they had a snowflake theme rather than hearts, I loved the decor. Thank you for letting me share you day with you!

New Umbrellas are Fun!

Today I had some fun with my big sister. We were testing some new umbrellas that I picked up at my favorite camera store, Photo Central. We had a great time trying out some different angles and lighting techniques. We even got my pups to sit in for a few shots, they are such hams.

Sweet Boo

Today, I got to have fun with Lydia(also known as Boo), what an angel. Her eyes will melt anyones heart. We set up a backdrop and hauled out some great prom dresses I found at a garage sale years ago and we had a great time.

I love dressing up little girls in floppy hats and big lacy dresses.

Here a tip for photographing toddlers, let them be. They will come in their own time and then you will get some amazing photos!

Engagement Photos

I met with Shelton and Kristi yesterday to do their engagement photos at the Forks in Winnipeg. It was a beautiful day with a gentle snow coming down. We got a few looks but people tried to keep out of the sight of the camera (thanks to all). We had lots of fun too, what a great couple, I am looking forward to the wedding!

Generally shooting in public places are fine, but if there is security around it is best to ask them if it is alright to do some photos. There are places that you are not allowed to photograph in, especially if you have a hired photographer. Always best to ask and be polite.

Tips for baby shoots:

*Go by the baby's schedule

*Naked baby's are always cute

*Warm hands

*Towels for little accidents

*Warm house

*Their house

*Make sure Daddy is home, I love to shoot Daddy's hands with the little one.

*Full tummies

It was a rainy, windy, miserable day... but she was such a beautiful bride, I couldn't take a bad picture! Shauna wanted Green Photos and by george we got them! What a great group of people to work with, everyone were such great sports to shoot outside. Sometimes you just have to laugh and keep shooting.

Big Thanks to my brides for the umbrellas, pretty sure I am the only person in the area that has a regular use for 21 umbrellas!

Photographing Churchill

Another family activity we got to do was a trip to Churchill, MB. We stayed at the best Bed and Sled ever! Bluesky is the place to go in Churchill (www.blueskymush.com), Jen is a wonderful cook and you felt like you just walked into your second home. We got a dog cart ride with Gerald and we met a blind sled dog. Isobel is completely blind but you would have no idea she was, she is in the photo with Jen shooting the kids.

A tip for when you are on vacation, sometimes the best photos are not compositionally the best but very funny. In the North, everyone is armed, Polar Bears are very dangerous so when you go for a walk you take a gun with you. In this photo Jen is taking a picture of the kids and it looks to me like she is holding them up. Does is surprise you that the kids were very well behaved on this trip!

I wanted to explain the Northern Lights photo I took over the Hudsons Bay, the sun was set and almost gone, the moon was overhead in all of it's glory, the northern lights danced over us but when you saw them with the naked eye they were not as bright as the photo shows. I used a tripod and set the shutter speed on my camera to a 15 sec exposure and the images I got stunned me. I have not altered these photos in any way, this is just how I shot it. If you ever see some northern lights look on your camera for the shutter speed and see if you can adjust this, most cameras have the ability, then find a place to set the camera down. You cannot hold the camera still for that long, even your heartbeat will cause camera shake and blur the photo.

My husband was my watch man while I shot the Northern Lights, Polar Bears are very sneaky! We did get the opportunity to see a polar bear swimming in the river but I did not have a big enough zoom, maybe one day. We also saw Beluga Whales so close Mark almost touched one. I can't wait to go back to Churchill!

Photographing Life

I had the opportunity to do some fun things this summer. My loving husband booked us on an early morning balloon flight over Winnipeg with Sundance Balloons. What an experience! The air was still because you moved with the breeze, that was an amazing sensation. Winnipeg is very peaceful in the early morning and as a photographer I was in my glory.

The colors of the fall are so enchanting. I love to see the changes everyday.

I got a chance to photograph some great families this beautiful fall, not only are they great models but so good friends.

Tips for Great Family Photos - Wear similar color clothes, they don't have to match exactly, it's a good idea to stay away from really bright colors or clothes with logos. Feed babies and husbands prior to the shoot and come with a positive attitude.

It Snowed Today!

I love snow, I can't help myself, it just makes me happy.

I also love babies, they make me happy too. I had the privilege to photograph a real cutie today. His name is Myles and what a great model, he is only a week old and very alert. I spent the hour with Mommy & Daddy as they cuddled and snuggled that little sweetheart and I think I captured some real keepers.

The start of a new adventure!

We are online, it is very exciting to see one's work on the web, I felt kind of famous in my own small world. My beloved pushed me into the world wide web kicking and panicking but there it is and I am happy.

We've had a really busy summer with many weddings, baby shoots and family shoots. Our first year in Manitoba and I've had lots of work. It is nice to be welcomed back to Mb with such open arms.

Today I finished a 15 minute slide show for the Hoot's and Harmonies Concert coming up Oct 24, 2008. I took photos of all of the local churches in the Beausejour area to put into this slideshow. I also photographed some really beautiful scenery as I traveled from church to church. I wanted to capture the wonderful fall colors before they all faded away. It has taken many hours to complete the slideshow but it is done and ready for the concert.

I also had the pleasure of doing several family photos shoots this fall, one at the Leg in Winnipeg and a few on my yard. We have been blessed with beautiful trees.

With this being our first attempt at a website, we will have some glitches but we'll get it right eventually.

I will also be posting the weddings I have done over the year so stay tuned!
